by Adam Williams 21 Jun 2022 0 Comments

The Madeira Optics team have recently returned from the 2022 edition of the Iberic Meeting of Optics Students, (IMOS 2022). An exhibition of optical equipment bringing together optical instrument manufacturers, retail partners, students, academics, and members of the scientific community.

The First Iberic Meeting of Optics Students (IMOS) is a conference organized by Iberic-wide students, mainly from the fields of optics and photonics and was held at the University of Aveiro, Portugal from the 13th to the 15th of June 2022. It was organized in partnership with Physics League Chapter, from the University of Valladolid, Spain, the Optica Student Chapter of the Institute of Optics, and the Spanish National Research Council, Madrid.

The event is designed to reinforce the relationship between Industry and Academia, inviting brand ambassadors from leading optics manufacturers and sales partners to talk through their range of products, and their applications, providing demonstrations while answering questions from students and attendees.

Topics for the IMOS 2022 included:

  • Biophotonics and Visual Optics
  • Fibre Optics & Optical Communications
  • Nonlinear Optics
  • Optoelectronics
  • Photonic Integrated Circuits
  • Photonics & Space Engineering
  • Quantum Computing and Communication

How was Madeira Optics Involved?

Madeira Optics were proud to be the Gold Sponsor of the event. As part of the event sponsorship, the team gave a presentation to the assembly about the Levenhuk range of microscopes. As authorised dealers of Levenhuk and Discovery Microscopes, Telescopes, Binoculars and Monoculars, Madeira Optics were invited to talk about their products, the benefits and applications of different models and give a presentation to the participants. Beginning with the Rainbow and 2L series microscopes which are perfect for beginners, young academia or even for home use, through to the Levenhuk ST Stereo Microscope, which is a professional instrument for applied research.

During the event, each participant had a display stand where some of their featured products could be seen and handled by the attendees. By far one of the most popular and busy stands of the exhibition, the products featured in the Madeira Optics showcase we well received. Guests had the opportunity to test the equipment for themselves, make some of their own observations and ask questions about the applications and use cases.

What the team had to say about the event

“We began the event by watching some PhD student presentations about a variety of subjects, like Biophotonics & Visual Optics, Fibre Optics & Optical Communications. Sitting in the audience and hearing the students speak passionately about their fields was an amazing experience and really made us value our attendance at the event.

One of the most important people we met there was the director of Optica Europe, Yann Amouroux. Optica is a worldwide society dedicated to promoting knowledge and improving the application of optics in the science and research community. Yann spoke very well on his subject and he was a pleasure to watch and learn from.

The most difficult part of our role within the event was unpacking and then re-packing more than 20 microscopes. Setting them up on display and getting them ready working for the event attendees to try them. However, their reaction, and seeing how amazed they were with our products was really satisfying and made it all worthwhile.

In the end, everything went according to plan. Our presentation was smooth and even better than we were expecting! We were able to demonstrate, what we do, who we are, the products we have, and why Madeira Optics is a leader in the field of Optical instrument sales and distribution.”

Will we be back next year?

In conclusion, our attendance at the event was very well received. We enjoyed our time working with students, the manufacturers, and other representatives of Levenhuk and Discovery. We’ll be back for IMOS 2023!
